Dalby Big Air 2008

Dalby Big Air 2008

March 8th to 15th 2008

Dalby, QLD is probably one of Australias less known Hang Gliding competition sites, maybe the fact that the Dalby Big Air is the last comp of the Australian season when the seasons in Europe and Brazil are already starting it seems not to have the same traditional presence of international pilots such as the other OZ comps. For me this time of the year it’s perfect for me since I the period between Dec. and Feb. ist Rio’s peak Hang Gliding season not allowing me to come earlier. So this was the first chance for me to check out the flying in Oz’s interior.

It’s worth to mention that Jonny Durand’s records flown recently out of Beechmont usually go trough the same area after the first 200km flown. Jonny who did not fly the comp becaue he was organizing an intermediate pilots clinic arrived in Dalby Saturday flying in from Beechmont.

The comp happened with mostly good conditions even with the strong S/E winds which blew the whole week sometimes peaking up to almost 50 km/h. But since the place is so flat and open even under high winds towing was relatively easy. The main drawback caused by this conditions, considered quite awkward by the locals, was that there were not many chances for task variation causing us to fly mostly downwind and therefore long drives back home after each amazing flight, task length was between 80 and 160km.

During the tasks we usually had variable conditions along the course line, from, sometimes, scratchy blue to incredible convergence cloud streets. Causing pilots to re evaluate their strategy a few times during each task.

It’s also worth mention Nick Purcell’s effort to get everybody together of task hours, always organizing Pizza nights and Barbecues.

After seven days of great conditions and some of the most laid back atmosphere I experienced away from Brazil. I’m sure that this is an event worth going and I will be doing my best to be back in 2008!
